Day 1: Arrival Iceland & The Volcanic Underworld

Arrive at Keflavík International Airport, located a 40-minute drive southwest of Reykjavík.

After clearing immigration and collecting your rental car, head to the world-famous Blue Lagoon. Soak in the milky-blue geothermal waters to refresh after your flight (pre-booking is essential).

In the afternoon, drive to the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel. Walk the path of ancient basaltic flow in one of Iceland’s longest lava tubes, marveling at the mineral-colored walls and natural skylights created by collapsed ceilings.

Continue to the village of Hveragerði for the evening. If energy permits, hike to the Reykjadalur Thermal River for a wild soak or visit the Eldhestar riding center to meet the sturdy, five-gaited Icelandic horse.

Begin at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart, creating dramatic fissures. Visit the Geysir Geothermal Area to watch Strokkur shoot boiling water into the air every few minutes.

Continue to Gullfoss, the “Golden Falls,” where a massive volume of water cascades down a 32-meter drop. For a quieter experience, visit the Secret Lagoon in Flúðir for a thermal soak, then take a detour to Gjáin, a picturesque valley of clear pools and volcanic structures that appears like a mirage in the lava fields. Join the Ring Road and drive south to Hella.

Head east along the Ring Road. Stop at the Lava Centre in Hvolsvöllur to learn about the island’s seismic activity. Visit Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk entirely behind the falls, and the nearby “hidden” Gljúfrabúi tucked inside a canyon. Marvel at the 60-meter drop of Skógafoss and explore the traditional turf houses at the Skógar Museum.

Drive to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach known for its towering basalt columns and offshore sea stacks.

Continue to the 2-million-year-old Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon for a short hike to the main viewpoint. End the day driving across the moss-covered Eldhraun Lava Field toward the glaciers.

Day 4: Glacial Lagoons & Spiky Mountains

Visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon to see massive icebergs drifting toward the sea. Take a pre-booked Amphibian Boat Tour to navigate between the ice and perhaps spot local seals. Directly across the road, walk on Diamond Beach, where crystalline ice chunks wash up on the black sand.

Drive toward Höfn and stop at Vestrahorn, a jagged, photogenic mountain on the Stokksnes peninsula. Wind along the scenic East Fjords, stopping at the fishing village of Djúpivogur to see the “Eggs of Merry Bay” art installation. Day 5: Into the Wild North & The Power of Water

Take a spectacular detour to the colorful town of Seyðisfjörður, known for its rainbow-painted street and art scene. Hike up to Fardagafoss waterfall for a morning stretch.

Leave the east and head north toward the Diamond Circle. Visit Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, where 500 cubic meters of water plunge over the edge every second. You can access the falls via Route 862 (paved) or 864 (gravel). If time and your vehicle permit, stop at the remote Möðrudalur highland farm for coffee in a traditional turf house. End the day at the volcanic wonderland of Lake Mývatn.

Distance: ~330 km (210 miles)
Accommodation: Fosshotel Mývatn

Day 6: Mývatn’s Geothermal Wonders

Explore the diverse geological features of the Lake Mývatn area. Visit Hverir to see bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles, then peek into Grjótagjá, the iconic lava cave filled with thermal water. Hike to the rim of the Hverfjall Crater for panoramic views of the lake.

Walk through Dimmuborgir, a vast field of dramatic lava “castles” and rock formations. Relax at the Mývatn Nature Baths, which offer stunning views across the volcanic landscape. Before reaching the “Capital of the North,” stop at Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods,” where the river Skjálfandafljót falls in a magnificent horseshoe shape.

Distance: ~110 km (70 miles)
Accommodation: Fosshotel Mývatn (or Akureyri local hotel)

Day 7: The Journey to the Peninsula

Spend the morning in Akureyri visiting the Art Museum or the botanical gardens. Begin the drive west through the Skagafjörður region, famous for its history and Icelandic horses. Stop at the Kolugljúfur Canyon to see the river plunge into a deep gorge.

Visit the Icelandic Seal Center in Hvammstangi or take a boat tour to spot wildlife in the bay. Step back in time at Eiríksstaðir, the reconstructed Viking-age home of Erik the Red and birthplace of Leif Erikson. Finish the day in the charming, island-dotted harbor town of Stykkishólmur.

Day 8: The Snæfellsnes Peninsula (Iceland in Miniature)

Depart Stykkishólmur and travel west along the peninsula. Climb the “Holy Mountain” Helgafell for a view over Breiðafjörður Bay. Visit the Shark Museum at Bjarnarhöfn to learn about the traditional fermentation of Greenland shark. Photograph Kirkjufell, the arrowhead-shaped mountain made famous by Game of Thrones.

Explore Snæfellsjökull National Park, visiting the black pebble beach at Djúpalónssandur and the basalt dikes at Lóndrangar. Walk the scenic coastal path between the romantic fishing villages of Hellnar and Arnarstapi, watching for nesting bird colonies along the cliffs.

Accommodation: Fosshotel Hellnar

Day 9: Basalt Columns & The Whale Fjord

Travel to Búðir to see the iconic black church set against golden sands and the Búðahraun lava field. Stop at the Gerðuberg Cliffs, a massive wall of perfectly symmetrical basalt columns.

Continue toward Borgarnes to visit the Settlement Center, then drive the scenic Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord). This route offers several hiking options, including the path to Glymur, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls. You may also stop at the Akranes lighthouses for a view of the Atlantic before completing the loop and arriving in Reykjavík.

Distance: ~240 km (150 miles)
Accommodation: Hotel Borg, Reykjavík

Day 10: Reykjavík Cultural Finale & Departure
