At the beginning of the Song dynasty (960-1127 CE), a thriving Jewish community took root in the Song capital of Kaifeng Later, along with the construction of the Siberia Railroad in the 19th century, and the Russian Revolution in 1917, many more Jewish people arrived in Harbin and Shanghai. This trip traces the Jewish heritages in China.

Day 1 Arrive in Harbin
Upon arrival in Harbin. Your guide will pick you up at your gate in the airport and assist your check-in at your hotel. Harbin held the largest Jewish Community in Asia during the 1920’s.

Day 2 Harbin (B/L)
In the morning, visit the well maintained Royal Hill Jewish Cemetery, the burial place for over 500 Jews including the Grandfather of Ehud Olmert, 12th Prime Minister of Israel. This sight has been an emotional experience for many Israeli Government officials. After lunch at local restaurant, begin by embracing the remaining legacy of the old Jewish Community by stopping by a Jewish High School, bank, and the Main Synagogue. In the evening visit the largest synagogue in East Asia, The New Synagogue that was built in the early 1920’s and is now the interesting Museum of Jewish Culture.

Day 3 Harbin – Beijing (B/D)
Transfer to the airport this morning and take a short 1.5-hour flight to the Nation’s Capital of Beijing. Upon arrival you will be met by our local guide and check-in to the hotel for four nights stay. This afternoon, visit the exquisite Summer Palace, a former retreat for the Imperial family, built by the Empress Dowager. In the evening enjoy the Legend of Lungful Show after vegetarian dinner at the Pure Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant.

Day 4 Beijing (B/L/D)
This morning experience the unforgettable! Visit one of the world’s most remarkable sights – the Great Wall of China, built over 2,000 years ago by Emperor Qin. The Great Wall stretches over 6,000 km across the top of China. After lunch explore the original roadway lined with marble statues leading to the Ming Tombs. Dinner at Baihe Vegetarian Restaurant

Day 5 Beijing (B/L/D)
Join or watch the locals doing Tai Chi, Qigong, Disco or Fan Dance as their morning exercise at the Temple of Heaven. After visit this majestic site, proceed to the Panjiayuan – known as the best market for things Chinese. A ride on Beijing’s modern subway to the Olympic Park and we will see the Birds Nest and Water Cubic. After lunch visit the Hutong by pedicab and take a leisurely stroll through the 700-year old narrow, winding streets that surround the Forbidden City. Watch the daily routines of the local people in their courtyard homes. Tonight, join the Kehillat Beijing Congregation for Sabbath services and dinner.

Day 6 Beijing (B/L)
This morning, take a walking tour and visit historic Tian An Men Square where Mao Tse Tung first raised the flag of the People’s Republic. Then tour the Imperial Palace, also called the Forbidden City and its gardens. Lunch at the Still Thoughts Vegetarian Restaurant. Return to hotel and afternoon is free at leisure.

Day 7 Beijing – Zhengzhou – Kaifeng (B/L/D)
This morning, take a high speed train to Zhengzhou and where on arrival, transfer by private car to the ancient city of Kaifeng. This is where many Jews immigrated to from Mesopotamia during the Song Dynasty, more than one thousand years ago. The first Jewish heritage site is Nanjiaojing Hutong, which was the home to the Jews during that time. We will visit the Qing/Ming Riverside Park and Chamber of Shaanxi and Gansu. In the afternoon, view the Iron Pagoda enroute to the former Jewish quarter North & South Teaching Torah Lane. This evening, we will host a dinner with descendents of the Kaifeng Jewish Community.

NEW CENTURY GRAND HOTEL KAIFENG

Day 8 Kaifeng – Zhengzhou (B/L/D)
Start your day by going to Kaifeng Museum to see the long history of the ancient city, where there is an entire exhibition room of the museum dedicated to the Jewish Heritage of the city. For lunch go to the home of a local Jewish family to experience local Jews’ everyday life. In the evening visit the Kaifeng Jewish Exhibition and a Jewish Cemetery. Return to Zhengzhou and overnight at your hotel.

Day 9 Zhengzhou – Xian (B/L/SD)
After breakfast, half day city tour of Zhengzhou. Transfer to the train station for your bullet train to Xian. The journey is about 2.5 hours. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred from train station to the hotel of your choice. A guided walking tour to the Great Mosque surrounded by forever-bustling Muslim Quarter.

Day 10 Xian (B/L)
Tour the Grand Mausoleum of Qin Emperor Shi Huang Di, first emperor of China. Protecting the emperor’s mausoleum are 8,000 life-size terra-cotta warriors and horses. Sample a typical Local specialty lunch with a demonstration of Noodle-Making. In the afternoon, we visit the City Wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, originally built as a Buddhist retreat in the 7th century. In the evening, enjoy a delectable dinner with superb entertainment in the Tang Dynasty tradition.

Day 11 Xian –Guilin (B/L)
Morning at leisure, check out and transfer to the airport for flight to Guilin. On arrival, a city tour to China’s ancient and scenic wonderland by visiting the Reed Flute Cave and marvel at its limestone formations. Next visit the fabulous Fubo Hill and Elephant Trunk Hill. Check in at Sheraton Guilin Hotel.

Day 12 Guilin – Li River – Yangshuo (B/L)

After a cruise down the Li River through China’s most famous landscape, you arrive in Yangshuo and stay at the hotel of your choice for overnight. The balance of the day is free.

Day 13 Yangshuo (B)
Start the day with a scenic boat trip down the Li River offering 30 miles of breathtaking, mist-shrouded mountains rising from the riverbanks. Since ancient times, this landscape has been the subject of countless poems and paintings. Your cruise will end at the colourful market town of Yangzhou, where you will stay at a hotel for two nights and have an opportunity to shop for delightful souvenirs and gifts. Evening enjoy the famous “Impression Liu San Jie Show”

Day 14 Yangshuo – Guilin –Shanghai (B/L/D)
In the morning, drive to the airport for your flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival transfer to the hotel. This afternoon, visit the famous Shanghai Museum housing the city’s priceless collection of bronzes, porcelain and paintings. Enjoy dinner at the Vegetarian Lifestyle.
In the evening visit the breathtaking Bund and the Marble Hall, the palatial home of the Kadoories, the former Peace Hotel built by Victor Sassoon and followed by a Huangpu river cruise.

Day 15 Shanghai (B/L)
In the morning start off by visiting a synagogue that is still in use today and visit the Tilanqiao region, which was the Jewish settlement during World War II. The historic Hongkou Ghetto which sheltered thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. At the Ohel Moshe Synagogue we attend the dedication of a computerized guest book generously donated by Larry Ungerman & Nina Budman. Lunch at the Jewish Community Centre with Rabbi Shalom Greenberg. In the afternoon ta e a stroll down Tangshan Road the center of the largest Jewish community in Shanghai. In the evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant followed by an amazing Acrobatic show.

Day 16 Shanghai – Suzhou – Shanghai (B/L)
Today full day excursion to Suzhou, a town so charming it is called the “Venice of the East”. See the town’s spectacular classical gardens maintained by Chinese nobility for centuries. Visiting Garden of Master Net (Wangshi Garden), then proceed to Tiger Hill Park. After lunch, enjoy the boat ride on the Grand Canal. At the famous Embroidery Research Institute, learn why China has, for generations, been world famous for its fine exotic silk. Late afternoon, return to Shanghai. Dinner and evening at your leisure and on your own.

Day 17 Shanghai – Home city (B)
Morning is free at leisure. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for your flight home.
